An electric wheelchair (also called a power wheelchair or power chair) is a battery-powered wheelchair you drive with a joystick instead of pushing by hand. The right one depends on where it will be used, how it needs to travel, and the user's size. Here is how the main types compare, and how to choose.

Electric wheelchair questions, answered
What is the difference between an electric wheelchair and a power wheelchair?
They are the same thing. "Electric wheelchair," "power wheelchair," and "power chair" all describe a battery-powered wheelchair driven with a joystick instead of pushed by hand. You will see all three terms used interchangeably here and across the industry.
How much does an electric wheelchair cost?
It depends on the type. Lightweight travel and folding models are the most affordable, while full-size and heavy-duty chairs cost more for the larger frame, motors, and range. Each product page shows the current price. Call us at 801-906-3900 and we will help you match a chair to your budget.
What is the lightest, most portable electric wheelchair you carry?
Our lightest models are folding carbon-fiber electric wheelchairs, some around 38 lb, that fold to fit in a car trunk. Browse our folding and travel models, or compare them side by side on our folding power wheelchair comparison page.
How much weight can a power wheelchair hold?
Standard models commonly support around 300 lb. Our heavy-duty electric wheelchairs go up to 600 lb on select models. Check the exact weight capacity on each product page and choose one with room to spare.
What is the difference between mid-wheel, front-wheel, and rear-wheel drive?
Mid-wheel drive turns in the tightest circle, which is helpful indoors. Front-wheel drive handles thresholds and uneven ground well. Rear-wheel drive tends to feel the most stable at higher speeds outdoors. We can help you decide based on where the chair will be used.
Are electric wheelchairs good for indoor use?
Yes. Compact and mid-wheel-drive models are designed to turn in tight spaces and fit through standard doorways. If the chair will be used mostly indoors, tell us and we will point you to the models with the smallest turning radius.
Can I try an electric wheelchair before I buy it, and do you deliver and service them?
Yes. You can test-drive electric wheelchairs in our Salt Lake City showroom, and we offer local delivery, setup, service, and repair across the Salt Lake Valley. Outside Utah, we ship nationwide and can help you choose by phone.
Do I need a prescription to buy an electric wheelchair?
No. You can purchase any electric wheelchair on this page without a prescription. A prescription may matter separately if you plan to seek insurance or Medicare reimbursement. Coverage varies, so check with your plan.
