Whether you are replacing an existing power chair or shopping for your first electric wheelchair, Affinity has the selection and expertise to make sure you get the electric wheelchair that is right for you. We understand that the choices available in power chairs can be overwhelming. By understanding the features and applications that the different models offer, you can know which electric wheelchair will best meet your needs.
Here is a brief overview of the different types of power wheelchairs that are available.
Travel power wheelchairs are designed not only for portability but also work well in compact or crowded spaces such as apartments, stores, cruise ships or malls. Most of our travel/portable models are disassembled by removing the seat, battery pack and base. Most components are relatively light but there may be some lifting involved in moving the heaviest components.
Folding power wheelchairs combine portability with full-time use. They have adaptable seating that accepts pressure-management cushions, full-coverage armrests and highly supportive backrest options. These models easily fit into automobile trunks or cargo areas for easy transport.
Full size power wheelchairs are built for every day use and abuse! Sturdy and durable, they are highly maneuverable due to their joystick controllers and small footprint. Several drive-types are available to suit every need. Center wheel drive power wheelchairs have the tightest turning radius' of all. They are perfect for moving around indoors in tight or confined space. Front wheel drive and rear wheel drive systems have benefits for outdoor use, and climbing or descending hills.
Designed for higher weight and larger users (ranging from 300 lbs. to 650 lbs.), heavy-duty electric wheelchairs are available in a variety of styles, including folding and center-wheel drive.
These are just what their name implies, ready to get you on the road. Models in this category disassemble for easy transport in the trunk of most cars. Travel scooters are easy to lift into the trunk, with the heaviest piece on some models weighing as little as 22 pounds. Sealed batteries make them airline safe. As you might imagine, these travel scooters are compact so we don't recommend them for people over 5'10" or 300 pounds. Some great choices include Invacare scooters and Pride scooters.
A step up in size and features from the travel scooters, these scooters offer full-sized comfort with three-wheeled maneuverability. They are the perfect choice if your mobility needs demand a scooter that you can use both indoors and out. With weight capacities up to 350 pounds and available features like power-elevating seats, there is a scooter for most everybody in this category. We carry all the top manufacturer brands including Golden and Pride scooters.
When you need maximum stability or are going to be using your equipment predominantly outdoors, a 4-wheeled scooter might be a better choice. On the larger models, the higher ground clearance and bigger tires make these a great choice for more rugged terrain, and some go as fast as 10 mph. The turning radius is wider, so the full-size models are not the best choice for indoor usage. Many find these ideal work and play outdoors.
If you weigh over 350 pounds, these are the mobility scooters for you. With both 3 and 4-wheeled models to choose from, and with weight capacities up to 500 pounds, there is sure to be a heavy duty scooter that meets your needs.
